Cloverfield DVD Commercial, Featurette, and Packaging!

There a new batch of videos on YouTube surrounding the Cloverfield DVD release, scheduled for April 22nd.

Here's the commercial running to promote the Cloverfield DVD:

Featurette from the Cloverfield DVD

This link is to a really cool Featurette from the DVD, where the director and creature designer discuss how they came up with the monster idea, the idea of it being a baby, etc. Hattip to Ed at Tagruato.blogspot for giving me a head's up!

No big surprises, but seems to be some of the extra filming of scenes there were cut out. Cloverfield outakes:

This last one is just for fun. It's a collection of all the scenes with the Cloverfield monster in them. I gotta tell ya, every time I see it Hud's cracks me up. I know he sounds geeky, corny, but he does it so well.

Want to know more about the intentions behind the Cloverfield monster? Check out these interviews with creature designer Neville Page.

This one features questions from the fans at Unfiction, a great group of alternate reality sleuths. It's my favorite:

Cloverfield Baby Monster Details

Cloverfield baby monster art
At Den of Geeks, Sarah Dobbs has a lengthy and interesting interview with Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield (2008).

Two of the most intriguing sections are where Matt describes coming up with the physical aspects of the monster, as well as the psychology of the monster.

Regarding the nature of the Cloverfield monster, Reeves talks about creature-designer Neville Page's concept:
"The idea was that the creature would have some kind of evolutionary biological basis. It wouldn’t just be random things coming out of its arm or some weird thing. There are actually things that he (Page) designed that are part of the monster that we never got to use. He had these feeding tubes which were just wild - he would come up with these crazy ideas that were just amazing and very creepy. Within the course of the movie, we could only reveal certain aspects of it, so that never got released."

There was much speculation at Unfiction about 'tubes' hanging from the monster, so that seems confirmed. I'm wondering now how he 'feeds' with them.

The other key revelation had to do with the mental state of the monster:
So the secret that we had was that the monster was a baby. Having just been born it was going through separation anxiety and had no idea where its mother was and was freaking out and was in a completely foreign place, didn’t understand a thing and that that would be sending it into a kind of infantile rage. Which was very frightening, but the thing that was also frightening to me was the idea that not only was it going through an infantile rage but, because it was suffering from this separation anxiety, it was spooked. It was really afraid. And as the military started shooting at it, I started thinking, like if you were attacked by a swarm of bees for the first time, it wouldn’t necessarily kill you but you’d be terrified, you’d be like, "What are these things doing?!" And for me there’s nothing scarier than thinking of something that big that’s spooked. Like if you’re at the circus and suddenly the elephants are spooked, you don’t want to be anywhere near that, you’ll be crushed."

The plans for a sequel are all but confirmed, and amazingly there's a chance Matt could start on that right away as his very next film! There is speculation that in the sequel, the "baby monster's" parents would show up. Wow! Talk about anticipation, that would be very interesting to see them bring even larger monsters into the situation. And you know how moms and dads can get, they wouldn't be spooked, they'd be VERY UPSET and protective of their baby. Rut Ro!

Second Cloverfield Viewing and Cool Monster Sketch

I saw the movie for the second time this weekend. I completely enjoyed the movie the first time, but I liked it even more the second time. I knew where and when to look, noticed more. I don't know why, but I even cared more about the characters the second time, though I don't suggest they were oscar performances. They seemed,in fact, ordinary people, but then weren't they supposed to be?

Chuparex posted this sketch of the monster at UnFiction, and I think it's the best I've seen so far by a good shot. Here's a copy of it:

Happy Cloverfield Movie Release Day!

I hope all of you Cloverfield fans are having a blast this weekend, checking out that ugly monster and the fate of the unlucky six.

Meanwhile, there was a new video on jamielovesteddy.com, as Jamie is preparing to go out to a party, presumably Rob's. Uh...she's a nasty girl.

There's also a new headline on the Tagruato site, and I have to tell you: I don't think the back-story is done. It think we will see more information. I don't know how much, or how long, but there are things in the movie that suggest to me that we may see more of the story. I also believe there will be a sequel, and I sure hope so.

Cloverfield Review and Monster Descriptions

Cloverfield movie screenings abound tonight, with early shows across Florida, Indy, Philly, and probably alot more.

If you've seen the movie, take a look at my early Cloverfield review (Jan 11), and leave a comment about what you liked, my cloverfield monster drawings, etc.

I'm planning to see it a second time this weekend, to get another look at the cloverfield monster, and just look for stuff that I missed in all the action the first time.

Cloverfield Review Up at KidReviewer.com

I just posted my review of Cloverfield based on a pre-screening last night. The review contains my crude drawings of the Cloverfield monster, both standing and walking, and a few spoilers. I don't give away the ending though.

See the complete Cloverfield Review .

"Overall, I thought there was lots of excitement. At times my heart was beating very fast. It's one thing to be in a dark tunnel full of rats, it's quite another when those rats are running from some sick creatures that will jump your face and sink their teeth in your chest. I thought the movie was awesome as a roller coaster ride, especially as a fan of the marketing campaign since the day the trailer hit last July. However..."

Cloverfield Hype is Huge as Premiere Approaches

As suggested before, events in the Cloverfield world are moving along in real time with the movie release. An attack has already happened in the Atlantic, Tagruato has new press releases, TIDOwave has new postings, jamielovesteddy has videos involing eating some seabed nectar, Rob posted on his myspace about landing a job with Slusho!, and invitations are being sent for Rob's goodbye party to movie fans in our real world.

I'm on a list to see an early screening tomorrow, and barring any trouble getting there after school (90 miles away), I'll be posting a review on KidReviewer.com.

Here are some of the latest news stories about the launch:

LAist Interview: Matt Reeves, Director of Cloverfield
LAist: Over the years you have been very selective in your choice of projects. What made you want to direct your first monster movie?
Matt Reeves: Well, I guess it had to do with the approach. At the time, there was a project I had written and will be directing called The Invisible Woman. I was putting together the cast and we had an actress cast for the lead and then she fell out twice and it just didn’t work scheduling-wise. During this time, J.J. Abrams had been putting together this deal for his new company. He’d been doing television stuff, but he was going to also be moving into producing features in addition to the stuff that he writes and directs. So he was really excited about doing this monster movie, and that was the thing he was telling me about all during my work on The Invisible Woman. It sounded really intriguing and fun, but I never thought that I would have anything to do with it. MORE Cloverfield Interview with Matt Reeves
